Welcome to our 'Visions of China' online photographic exhibition. The photographs that comprise this exhibition were taken during a two week trip to Shanghai and Sozhou in August 2005. Actually it was not planned to make this trip a photographic voyage but rather just a holiday. I was faced with a dilemma here because, on the one hand, I needed a vacation after a few month of intensive photography work but, on the other hand, as a professional photographer, one is expected to bring back some interesting photographs. So I 'restrained' myself by taking only one small camera versus a 20kg bag of photographic equipment. However, I still ended up with a few hundred photographs, some of which are shown here.

This online exhibition is divided into 3 galleries.

Shanghai Vistas: The images shown here fall into the category of travel photography and will show you some spectacular images of this fascinating metropolis.

Sozhou Vistas: Sozhou, the 'Venice of China' as Marco Polo called it, is a city with 7 Million people just 100 km away from Shanghai. It has a stunningly beautiful 'old city'; parts of which have been declared a 'UNESCO World Heritage site'. The main attractions here are the city's tranquil gardens. These centuries-old gardens stand in stark contrast to the modern new parts of Sozhou, perfectly exemplifying the direction in which China is heading. Just outside of Sozhou is China's second largest lake where I visited a few islands and was also able to capture some enchanting images.

Visions of China: In this part of the exhibition you will find my very personal and artistic interpretation of how I saw China. Most of the images here were taken in and around Sozhou's gardens and temples. Visiting all those magnificent sites I was truly inspired by the beauty of Chinese architecture, Chinese culture and tradition. I hope you will enjoy this exhibition and I would like to hear from you what you think about the photographs.
